HTML5 Video support made easy all inside a Stack Add on for the Stacks plugin

Welcome to the symVideo5 Stack Library for RapidWeaver

Today you can now start to take advantage of HTML 5 Video in RapidWeaver whilst automatically ensuring you support the browsers that don't .

symVideo5 is a brand new stack and probably the most powerful video stack ever released from SymfoniP

Key Features:

  • True HTML 5 playback supporting H.264, WebM, Ogg Theora Video files
  • Automatic Flash Fallback for browsers that do not support the HTML 5 video tag, this is out of the box in this stack - no messy coding or thinking how you can handle this.
  • Variable Width and height settings for your HTML5 videos
  • Automatic Flash Fall Back using the FlowPlayer Flash player
  • Fancy HTML 5 player controller (you can use default controls too)
  • Use external warehoused urls (saves space in your RapidWeaver project)

Included in the download package is a link to our user manual.

Not only does this manual cover stack usage and implementation to your RapidWeaver project . I also share with you some excellent tips on using Video for Web, converting video (h.264 and ogg theora) to use with symVideo5 in order for your pages to completely support HTML5 Video.

Got questions on symVideo?

If you are trying to be smart and thinking ‘what if I add a symVideo Stack into an Extra Content Area’?
Yes, it will work in HTML5 only mode. However, we do not support any creative uses of our symVideo5 stack inside Extra Content Areas of Themes, especially ones that involve the use of sliders or hidden content to expose the Extra Content. We have spent a lot of man hours coding a sensible approach to adding video to a page with elegant fallback for browsers that do not support it, you have been warned!

Can I have variable Flash Player Width and Heights?
This defeats the purpose of Global Settings !
We want you to use HTML 5 video, anyone who is using a browser that does not support HTML 5 should be happy they get to see your video  :D

Can I place this inside an Accordion Stack?
We like to keep it simple ‘one effect per page’ to quote the Stacks Developer. Again, it is down to the same reasons as Extra Content Areas and hiding content. HTML5 mode will work as the browsers are not too fussy .. but when you go to IE and Flash FallBack Mode there could be problems.

Why Cant it play YouTube Videos?
This Video player is for your own content that you are free to publish and do what you want with. YouTube pretty much owns your content when you publish to them, read the small print.
So that is a no :)

Can I play this in a lightbox/overlay?
We are trying to keep this simple and stable for you to use in a true cross-browser scenario HTML5 Video on a Page with Flash fallback for browsers that do not support it.
If we had included a lightbox effect we would have said so , that’s not to say we can consider it but this will be based on the interest in the stack as it is right now to add to the roadmap.

Help! Firefox won't play my Theora/Ogg video! It just downloads the file!!
Firefox will only be able to play Theora files if they are served using the correct content type of 'video/ogg'.
Not all web servers recognise Theora files, and serve them as binary files.
You can force Apache to serve Theora files correctly by adding the following line to your server configuration or .htaccess file:

    AddType video/ogg .ogv

While you are at it just add , also :)

    AddType audio/ogg .ogg
